How To Tell If Savannah Cats Are The Right Pets For You

By Timothy Reed

If you are like many cat lovers, the idea of a sleek looking wild cat is something you want to add to your home. Savannah cats are big, beautiful, intelligent beasts but they are not the best choice for every household. Here is what you need to know about these cats so that you can decide whether one would be a good addition to your family.

A large number of people love the idea of having an exotic wildcat in their home and a Savannah can be a great way to do this. They lack many of the drawbacks that having an actual wildcat in your home would have. They are fun, playful companions while keeping the striking, exotic appearance that so many people love.

These cats were first bred in the 1990's but it took years for the Savannah to be formally recognized as a breed. Originally, a male Serval was crossed with a female Siamese in order to create the first Servals. Since then, breeders have been working to improve the breed.

One thing that makes members of this breed so appealing is their large size. While people tend to think all Savannah felines are large, this isn't necessarily the case. Smaller specimens are generally those that have more domesticated feline blood in them. First or second generation crosses can weigh as much as twenty pounds but because they are so long legged they tend to look much larger than that.

Getting your home ready for your new pet is important and these pets often need more preparation than smaller felines may. For example, a larger container will be needed for your pet to use as a litter box so that they can move around and be happy. These felines are also good at getting into cupboards and closets so you may need special equipment to do so.

These creatures have a laid back personality that a lot of people enjoy. In many cases, owners have likened these pets to be more like dogs than cats. They need exercise and stimulation like any cat would so you will need to look at getting some sturdy toys and scratching items for your home.

These cats can be quite expensive. First or second generation crosses can cost thousands of dollars. As you get to further generations the pets will be smaller but will also cost less than first or second generation crosses will. Keep in mind, however, that even within the same litter there can be quite a difference in the size of the kittens.

There are a few things that you should look for in a breeder before you purchase one of their kittens. The adults should be healthy and happy and the offspring should be well socialized. You also want to make sure that the breeder can show you the lineage of their pets so that you know what generation cross you are getting. This can help give you important clues about the eventual size of your adult when it finally matures.
