Cat Care: The Do's And Don'ts About Removing Fleas

By Robin Setser

While most people associate fleas with incessant itching, they can be far more dangerous if left to linger. Longtime cat owners will say the same, as fleas have been known to result in discomfort, disease, and even death. What this means is that it's important to know how to go about flea prevention for cats. By following these do's & don'ts, such an endeavor will prove to be less challenging than you might have imagined.

DO ensure that your cat is brushed. As companies such as Assisi Animal Health will tell you, a cat should be brushed multiple times a day. What this does is allow fleas to be easily removed without your pet feeling any discomfort. However, you should make sure that your comb is of the fine-toothed variety, as this usually yields the best results. Not only will it remove the pests in question, but any eggs that they might have laid as well.

DON'T overlook the importance of home maintenance. While this is needed to make your house look presentable, it's easy to forget that it serves as a wellness measure as well. After all, if you've been outside for an extended length of time, you stand the chance of bringing insects into the home without knowing it. The same can be said for cats and fleas, which increases the need for home maintenance. The cleaner your home is, the healthier it will be for you and your loved ones.

DO place more emphasis on organic and natural methods. When there is an absence of chemicals, your cat won't be able to ingest them. Unlike dogs, cats bathe themselves, which is done by them licking their own fur. If you were to apply chemicals to their body, they stand a chance of ingesting them, which negatively impacts their health in the long term. Organic and natural methods are the ones that you should turn to.

DON'T use over-the-counter products without consulting your vet first. Even though the aforementioned products claim to remove fleas in no time, the truth is that they not work for your cat. In fact, it's possible that your pet will develop side effects, which means that you have to consult your vet ahead of time. They will be able to tell you all about the products that are on the market and whether they will help your cat's health in general.
