Fox Red Labrador Puppies Are Standouts In The Color Category

By Kenneth Anderson

Labradors make dog lovers out of almost everyone they meet. It's hard to resist these fun loving, affectionate animals that never meet strangers. Labs easily become beloved family members. They are patient with little kids and seem to understand the established hierarchy that comes with pets that have been in the home longer than they have. Labs can be cream, chocolate, and all shades in between, but people still stare at fox red Labrador puppies.

These pups don't rate a separate category just because of their color. The kennel clubs lump them in with the yellow Labradors. Within this category shades are allowed to range from cream to the rusty shade of the Foxes. The shades can vary on the back, ears, and underside of a dog. As confusing as it may seem, your red Labrador is actually yellow.

These were not always the most popular puppies in the litter. There was a time when black Labs were preferred because of their use as hunting dogs. These animals blended into the landscape unlike the rusty ones that stood out and got noticed by the hunter's prey. When we think of Labs today, the blond ones come mostly to mind. At one time, they were fairly rare, and the darker yellow and rust colored were the most common.

People always seem to be attracted to what is rare and unusual. That's one of the reasons the blond Labs became so popular. This was not lost on breeders who became intent on producing the color that was in demand. Eventually, there were so many light colored Labs, people assumed that was the only authentic shade.

The tide has turned now though. During the time when the light color Labs were so popular, the rust color was bred out and became rare. Once they became the rare Labs, their popularity rose. Today breeders are actively producing the rusty Labs to meet the increasing demand.

The color is still unusual enough that many people question whether or not rust colored Labs are purebred. One of the reasons for this may be the controversy involving silver Labradors. Among certain circles, there is a strong suspicion that this color is the result of a Weimaraner and Labrador breeding. Red Labs, on the other hand, are completely authentic. The color is almost as old as the breed itself.

Another controversy involves the breeding of rust colored Labs. There is concern among some individuals, and envious breeders of blonds, that popularity of the rust color has driven some unscrupulous breeders into unsafe practices just for the sake of color, and to take financial advantage of the current trend. Most blond Labs cost significantly more than the reds.

There may be some truth to this, but it is not unusual for people to take advantage of supply and demand. When you are considering one of these pups, it's more important to make sure you are working with a responsible and reputable breeder. No matter the color, Labs will continue to be loved.
