Looking For Large Dogs That Dont Drool

By Richard Green

Many people are put off having a big dog because they are worried about slobber. A lot of breeds are prone to slobber when they drink and some will wipe their faces on furniture or nearby people. Some breeds have slime hanging from their face almost constantly, but there are some large dogs that dont drool.

Like humans, a dog will produce saliva when eating or expecting food. This is perfectly normal and as Pavlov noticed with his pets they would produce saliva as soon as they saw him enter a room in anticipation of a meal. Like humans the amount of saliva varies as does the ability to keep their saliva under control.

Long lips or jowls are more likely to let the saliva run down instead of staying in the mouth. Breeds with flatter faces like pugs can also suffer with slobbery faces. Once the slobber is noticeable the animal might shake its head to remove the offending drip and anyone nearby can be the recipient of a big blob of saliva. Owners of droolers usually carry a supply of paper towels to combat this.

If you are the sort of person that does not want to clean slobber from walls and sofas but does like big dogs then look for a breed with a short jowl. The jowls are the long droopy lips most often associated with breeds like Boxers, Mastiffs and Great Danes. Breeds with short jowls are normally hounds or working dogs as long jowls would hamper them when hunting or herding.

Larger dogs who are in the hounds or working include Afghans, German Shepherds, Salukis, Wolfhounds, Borzois and Dalmatians. These all have shorter jowls and longer faces which are less prone to slobbering. A working dog often called the juggernaut of huskies is the Alaskan Malamute. This wolf like, majestic looking breed is not a big slobberer but does need to be worked and trained to stop it getting bored.

Made famous by the Disney movie, the Dalmatian is a real beauty with its spotty coat. Bred to be carriage dogs, to this day they will still run and run. There are few horse drawn carriages for them to run beside in the modern world, but they do like s lot of exercise.

Afghan hounds and Irish Wolfhounds are beautiful to look at extremely impressive. Both breeds need a regular grooming to keep them looking fantastic and to prevent matting in the coat. The Saluki is also stunning with its sleek looks and long soft ears. Easy to groom these are intelligent animals who can run incredibly fast to chase down prey so will need a lot of space to run.

All animals have saliva as it is a necessary part of the eating process. That means no dog is going to be completely free of dribbles. Even a breed which is not known for dribbling can still have an individual with a mouth defect and drools more than most. If you are someone who cannot bear the thought of any saliva then perhaps a fish would be a better choice of pet.
