By Richard Howard

Sheepdog is a term that is generally used to refer to all breeds of dogs that are used to herd sheep. There are several breeds of dogs that fall under this category, including border collie, Hungarian Puli, Tornjak, and Shetland, Icelandic, Cumberland, Croatian, Maremma, Old English, and Polish Lowland sheepdogs among others. This article specifically talks about the Old English sheepdog.

This breed of dog has a large size with an athletic posture and a unique shaggy coat. In the past farmers used these dogs to drive their cattle around. Nowadays these dogs are used as pets as compared to their original duty in the past. They stay in comfortable homes but are occasionally used in herding, obedience, agility and conformation trials.

Naturally Old English are usually playful. It is normal to observe their puppies play with other dogs, small kids, and other pets. The adolescence stage of Old English is extended by three years due to this playful nature. The playful nature goes even beyond adolescence into adulthood. This kind of temperament is what makes it easier to raise them in homes together with other pets.

Their pups learn quickly. Trainers do not have to repeat the same trick or skill over and over in order for them to master. In general, they are an intelligent breed. They know how to keep themselves busy when left alone. They have the ability to perform different both physical and mental exercises. These include obedience, agility, searching and rescue and herding.

The playful nature of these dogs also dictate that should be given a lot of mental and physical exercise. Puppies and fully grown dogs need to be walked and exercised daily. One should avoid leaving the dogs alone and lonely. Human companion is very vital to the proper development of the pups.

A puppy can grow to be a kind dog if nurtured properly and given enough care. They have the ability to be good family dog and a good buddy to a child. They may be a good family dog or the best dog for companionship but this breed does not make good watchdogs. These dogs mingle with strangers without any introduction and they hardly bark at strangers. There have been incidences where they to protect their family from strangers.

Old English Sheepdogs are normally very active at a young age. This means that they become destructive if that energy is not put to proper use through exercise. One destructive way of releasing their energy is chewing on items around the house including furniture besides running around. Keep them busy and ensure they exercise regularly. It is good that way.

It is advisable that the dogs need be kept cool because of their thick coat. During a hot weather it is not advised that they be exercised under such conditions. In order to avoid any misbehavior they need to be given obedience training when they are still young. Obedience training lessons need to be given by a dog trainer who is qualified and certified. If an individual is familiar with dog training then they can do the training personally.
